The little things by M. Jean Pike

Character and author interview: M. Jean Pike

Answers by Rochelle from The Little Things

1 What is the last gift you gave someone?

A chocolate mud pie, complete with gummy worms!

2 If a film were made about you, who would you want to play you?

Angelina Jolie

3 What would you chose as your last meal and why

A bacon cheeseburger and a strawberry milkshake from Maddy’s Diner! It’s my favorite comfort food.

4 Cats or dogs

Definitely dogs. Especially grumpy old bulldogs.

5 What one thing would you remove from your daily routine and why

It’s a toss-up between washing dishes and doing laundry

6 Tea or coffee

Coffee!

7 Describe yourself in one word

Unpredictable

8 If you could change one thing about your personality what would it be

Being too much of a perfectionist. I beat myself up for the smallest mistakes.

9 What is your favourite colour

Red

10 What car do you drive

I don’t own a car, and I don’t have a driver’s license, but I sometimes drive my foster mother’s 20 year old Buick

And now the author interview.

Choice of two. Either:

A.   You are marooned on a desert island with unlimited food and drink. You have a copy of the Bible and the full works of Shakespeare. You can also take 8 pieces of music, one other book and a luxury item which isn’t a person, a way of escaping the island or a way of communication. What would you chose as music/book/luxury item

For music I would want contemporary Christian music soundtracks, Lauren Daigle, For King and Country, Chris Tomlin, etc. Beautiful, spiritual music keeps my head in the right place.

The book would have to be a blank journal so I could keep writing stories!

For my luxury item I would probably want an air mattress so I could sleep in comfort.

Book Blurb for The Little Things:

A decade ago, Rochelle Delany made a decision that changed her life forever.
Wanting more than just football games and potluck suppers, she boarded a bus for California and didn't look back. But instead of a glamorous life, she became trapped in a nightmare of labor trafficking. Now, she's made a daring escape and returns home to Ohio.
Sandy Fairbrother has a problem with trust.
Twice betrayed, he now puts his faith only in God. He' s a single dad doing his best to grow his construction business and raise his young son. But haunted by an impulsive kiss Rochelle gave him fifteen years ago, her unexpected return has him rethinking things. He' s been given a second chance to win her heart. And this time, he plans to succeed.
Rochelle barely remembers Sandy, but she's drawn to his goodness. But just when she thinks she's found peace, her past catches up with her, and she finds herself in danger of losing the only safe haven she' s ever known.

Excerpt:

Rochelle stared at the ceiling, reviewing the day and how her thoughtless remarks had added to Austin’s anger. And Sandy Fairbrother, with his easy smile and his amazing blue eyes, she’d made him angry, too. She wished she could start the day over.

Lying in the dark, she was visited by vague memories of Sandy coming into the store when she was working, to buy a drink or a candy bar. He made awkward small talk with her while she rang up his purchases. It seemed to her now that he’d always been on the periphery of her life. Why had she never paid attention to him?

Because he hadn’t been nearly as good looking then as he was now. How shallow she’d been.

In any case, selling him the house was out of the question. She thought she’d have a few days to think of a way to present her plan to Austin, to talk things over with him. She certainly hadn’t known she’d have to fight off a prospective buyer the moment she got home.

Home.

Could she really slide back into her life in Redford’s Crossing, reclaim her home and her relationship with her brother? Could she eventually find work, buy Austin out and own Bessie’s house outright? She had so many questions, but no solid answers. One thing was for sure. She would never go back to Sunny Springs, California. Best case scenario, Menzo would have her arrested. Worst case, he’d have her killed.

My review:

Yep it was that good I read it in one sitting. Rochelle is running away and goes home to the small town she grew up in. But everything has changed. Sandy loved her from afar in school but now has trust issues and Rochelle isn’t exactly forthcoming. Throw in a cute kid and a dog and it’s an amazing and absorbing read. I received an ARC and it’s going back into the TBR pile and on my buy list.

Phooey Kerflooey: Three Kids And A Puppy vs The Squirrel Of The Apocalypse by Kristen Joy Wilkes

Kristen says "Once upon a time, our family of three young boys welcomed a princess into our home. A furry princess, a princess who ended up weighing more than they did, was terrified of haybales and bags of chicken feed, and refused to drink out of anything but her own special mug. Our boys were charmed by their puppy princess and asked that I write a story based on her. It took me seven years, but finally I present to you  Phooey Kerflooey ! While our own boys delighted in Princess Leia Freyja’s scaredy-cat antics and princess ways, the boys in the story take a bit longer to appreciate Phooey’s gifts. However, I pray that you will enjoy their journey together as they battle the squirrel of the apocalypse and search for perfect peace amidst a storm of chaos. " And I loved this one. It's gone straight back into the TBR pile. A puppy will fix everything.  A boring new house?  Boring house + puppy = adventure!    An attacking squirrel?  Evil squirrel + puppy =...

Phooey Kerflooey vs The Battle Squirrel by Kristen Joy Wilks

Phooey Kerflooey has finally found a home of her own. Too bad a raging squirrel found it first! Rasputin the squirrel spends his time stealing snacks, pooing on the counters, and biting tender noses. Phooey’s perfect home has become a perfect storm of chaos! Phooey will do anything for her boys. Almost step on the shiny floor. Mostly go potty outside. Bite a baby carrot in half. Maybe two carrots, or even three! The boys want Phooey to chase Rasputin and save the day, but it’s hard when so many scary things stand in her way. If only Phooey had her pink dolly to boost her bravery. Can Phooey find her courage and chase that bad squirrel out of their lives forever? Maybe tomorrow. Or the day after that. For sure by next week. Phooey will be very brave . . . someday. Theme verse: Isaiah 32:18--My people will live in peaceful dwelling places, in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest. My review:  Phooey is back in this wonderful story of the puppy v the battle squirrel. Havi...
